Shifting directions

Since I started this blog, it’s gone through a few iterations. That’s because I couldn’t decide what I wanted it to be about.

What I knew was what I didn’t want to write about.

Me in Paris

Me in Paris

That included product reviews unless I’ve bought the product and absolutely love it. Event reviews such as restaurants, parties and showcases because everyone does them and I would add no value to the conversation. Also, I find them incredibly tedious to write unless I get paid and I don’t need free stuff. (Before you accuse me of shade, I’ve said this to many PR people. If I’m not covering it, I usually don’t attend. Seems fair, I think.)

Finally, no personal style because my style is not very adventurous. I love a good skirt and a button down. I wear red lipstick. I would also feel silly taking pictures of myself. Besides, that’s why there’s Instagram.

So I know what I don’t want to write about, what do I want to write about? That’s a bigger question. My primary focus, outside of my job is my freelance work. So do I write articles here? Possibly. I could make it about me but, jesus christ, I don’t think I have the ability or desire to dig that deeply.

You see my dilemma. I think this is a good space to continue practicing my work. I also hope to encourage a good friend to get her blog going. She’s got a strong voice on her chosen topic but is hesitant to put it down on paper.

After talking with several friends, I’ve decided that the blog is going to be about what interests me: Canadian fashion – the business and the people, not the shows. Articles that I won’t pitch but want to explore; experiences that I think might be of interest to the reader – so not interests that I’ve had that are solely about me. Finally, the occasional piece about freelance work with links to useful articles.

It’s a mishmash but I think this is the plan. Now, to start writing.
