Gushing: You Curl Curling Wand by ConAir

Indulge me for a moment. I usually don’t do product reviews because everyone does them and this isn’t the purpose of this blog but sometimes I want to give a shout out to a company that makes a product I really, really like and actually use. It’s the You Curl by ConAir and it’s marvellous.

People think having curly hair means washing it, throwing some product in it and you’re done. It really doesn’t.

No Caribana = Bad Trinidadian?

I find myself conflicted about Caribana/Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival.

Actually, no, I don’t. I’m not conflicted at all. I don’t go to Caribana and I have no desire to go. This is apparently strange because as a Trinidadian living in Toronto, that’s one of the first questions I get asked this time of year. My response to the question is generally, “Nope, I don’t go. That probably makes me a bad Trini.”

Pride, Homophobia and Open Secrets

When the question went out about whether we’d write something about minorities and the automatic presumption that most are homophobic, I said, “Sure! I’ll write something.” I just wasn’t sure what to write about since homosexuality was never really discussed when I was growing up.

My parents aren’t homophobic and they raised us the same way. When I thought about homophobia and the gay movement in Trinidad, there are three moments that stand out for me.

The Imagined Politics of Sunblock

I recently tweeted that I wore sunblock for three reasons: Vanity, health and post-colonialism. Then I took a moment to actually read what I wrote and then I looked at my coffee table and saw the following:

Roc’s Soleil Protexion+ in SPF 60

Neutrogena UltraSheer Dry Touch in SPF 45

Clinique Body Creme in SPF 30

and Lubriderm Moisturizer with Sunscreen in SPF 15

Banana Republic and Gap Fall/Winter 2011

I had the opportunity to preview the Gap and Banana Republic fall/winter 2011 lines and overall, they’re very good. Banana Republic used an autumnal mood – lots of greens, berries and browns. There were wools, silks and patterns.

The highlights were the stunning leather vest, the leopard-print trench coat – a perfect leopard even for those who don’t wear leopard and finally, wool skinny trousers with ankle zips.

There were pieces even a future princess would love.

On taking a compliment

So I've lost weight recently. It's noticeable and I've been rocking the body a bit in new dresses. People have noticed and compliment which is always lovely. I tend to say, "Thank you!" and "I have, haven't I?" "Bootcamp!" and  "I do look amazing, don't...

What I’ve learned from freelancing

“Freelancing. You spend half your time working and the other half looking for work.” — My neighbour

I’ve always freelanced in some form or another. Sometimes I was paid and sometimes I did it for free (friends, favours, bylines). I’ve always had a job though. There was the protection of a steady paycheque to cushion me against the quirks of freelancing.

Then last August I lost my job. I got a decent severance and I had savings but those never last as long as one would like so I had to do something quickly.

Would you pay towards your friend’s house?

Are you attending a wedding this year? If you’re thinking about getting the happy couple a gift, then forget going to the Bay or Kitchen Stuff Plus orWilliam Ashley.

It’s not about the punch bowl that will never get used or the blender that will collect dust in the cupboard. The new trend in gifts is something that you know they’ll use.

Why? It’s because they’ll be living in it.

The Wales bag from Nella-Bella

There are many ways to review a new bag. You look at the size, the depth, the colour and what it can hold.

Stuffing it with clothes, underwear and toiletries to sleep on your brother’s floor because your condo flooded isn’t usually the first step when testing a new bag.

January is the month for the slow-cooker

Slow-cooker chili

While I’m not a dedicated collector of airmiles points, I do collect enough to indulge in what I call ‘pointless appliances.’ You know the ones I’m talking about. You don’t really need them and they take up space in your cupboards but they’re just cool.
