Go-karting

I wrote an article on winter tires for one of my freelance gigs and as a result of that I've ended up on another PR list. That's never a problem. While I pride myself on my ability to write on a variety of topics, PR...

Umbro Spring 2011

I remember watching that crucial game between Germany and England during the World Cup this year. I say crucial because every commentator kept talking about the last time the two soccer* powerhouses met in 1966. England took the Cup that year and they have never forgotten that. Think of it like Canadians about Paul Henderson and you’ll get the idea.

ECCO Spring/Summer 2011 shoes

Maybe it’s just me, but I find it very difficult to find a cute, casual shoe for spring. Dressy shoes? No problem. Shoes that are so decorated you can use them as Christmas tree decorations or a hat? Not hard to find.

A casual shoe that looks good with most things and isn’t a flip flop or boring ballet flat? Call me picky but that’s difficult.

While not all of ECCO’s spring/summer offerings were to my taste, I have to commend them for producing shoes that looks great and comfortable.

On getting the Globe and Mail

When the Globe and Mail went through a massive redesign recently, they not only redesigned the website, they also spent a lot of money on the print edition of the Globe and Mail.

I know four people who work at the Globe and Mail so when they offered a three-month free trial for their print edition, I signed up and the first issue was delivered the following Monday.

Defending the manual transmission car (repost)

manual-transmission.jpg

When my parents signed me up for driving lessons nearly 20 years ago I had no choice but to learn how to drive on a car with a manual transmission.

I didn’t question it at the time because where I lived most of the cars on the road were stick shifts, not to mention you could get a full licence or an automatic transmission licence.

Gap Spring 2011

It’s time to give your skinnies a bit of a break. Instead of wearing them all the time, GAP wants you to mix in a high-waisted, wide-legged jeans in a medium denim for spring 2011.

In other words, the strong seventies influence continues.

TOMS shoes and Movember

It's going to be Movember in two days and that means there will be guys sporting or trying to sport mustaches to bring awareness to prostate cancer. Apart from comments like, "Grooming tools" and "Oh god, pornstaches" I haven't spent a lot of time thinking about...

How to Get Your Favourite Shows Without Paying for Cable

I got rid of my television nearly 18 months ago and thought I’d miss it. Turns out I don’t, thanks to a few tips and tricks I’ve picked up along the way.

No, not illegal tip and tricks. Let’s acknowledge that yes, there are illicit ways to find your favourite shows online, and move on to discuss the many legal ways of watching your favourite shows.

Old Navy’s Winter Winter Coats

I don’t have a black winter coat.

I’ve got a red winter coat, two leather jackets and a grey peacoat, but not a good black winter coat.

So when Old Navy asked me to check out their winter coats, I went to see what they had on offer. I haven’t gone into Old Navy for a while and when I have, it’s usually to pick up a cheap pair of flip flops or a bikini. It’s not the first place I think of for coats.

God Save the Queen at The Room

I had the opportunity to attend the God Save the Queen event at The Room in The Bay, thanks to Kimberly Lyn. The event celebrated the works of some of Britain’s best young designers including Charlotte Olympia Dellal, Erdem Moralioglu, Jonathan Saunders, Marios Schwab, Mark Fast, Nicolas Kirkwood and Giles Deacon. Ok, Mark Fast is originally from Winnipeg, but he lives and works in London.

Adult Sleepovers

My friend S is here for the weekend. She came down on Friday from Ottawa with her two uncles and has spent the last 24 hours crashing on my couch.

So far we’ve stayed up until ridiculous hours in the morning, drank far too much coffee and discussed gender, sexuality and Star Trek. The older I get the more I like having friends over. Forget girls’ night out. I like girls’ night in.

Beyonce and Jay-Z Make Guinness Book of World Records

240-jay-z-and-beyonce.jpg

Music power couple Beyonce Knowles and Jay-Z have made the Guinness Book of World Records for being the highest-earning power couple in the world. To accomplish the rare feat, they had to knock out perennial media darlings David and Victoria Beckham among others. The numbers are staggering, but perhaps not entirely surprising, considering how omnipresent their music is.

How Much for the Stuff in my Basement: Comics and Collectibles

DareDevil / Peter Dixon

So you’re in the basement one day and you see an unlabelled box sitting quietly in a corner. Curious, you open it and you see stuff that might have been your ex’s, your parents’ or even yours from years ago. Your first instinct is to throw it out. After all, you don’t need it but before you do that, have you thought about selling it and pocketing the cash?
