Writing for free

A repost with an update. I was a party last night and it got to the time of night when strangers start talking to each other. I told a man I was a writer and the conversation turned to writing for free. He asked if I...

Testing the BlackBerry 10 OS, first thoughts

[caption id="attachment_2378" align="aligncenter" width="205"] (Eric Risberg / Associated Press)[/caption] It turns out that being left-handed can constrain you when you're flicking through screens on the BlackBerry 10. It is better when you use your right hand. That's what I found out when I was invited to...

Let’s talk holiday shopping

Here’s something I drafted but didn’t use. I thought I’d put it here:

———————————

Have you started your holiday shopping yet? If you’re like most of us, you’re probably planning do it in the next couple weeks but how are you planning on paying for it?

Here’s what happens – you go into a mall, walk around, peer at things and buy something that might work for our family and friends.  The next thing you know, you’ve overspent your budget and become one of the 12 per cent of Canadians who go into debt for holiday gifts!

How much money? Ouch!

Tomorrow, four times the usual payment is coming out of my account and going on my mortgage. I try to save up so I can do lump sums as well as pay a little extra every fortnight. The thing is, after I called my bank and asked them to take out that money, I hung up and felt a little sick. That’s a lot of money.

Yorkdale expansion

Yorkdale mall is on track to not only be the biggest mall in the country but to have the most luxury retailers under one roof. It’s expanding its square footage all to welcome the recent influx of US, UK and European retailers who are here to take advantage of our stable economy (fiscal cliff notwithstanding.)

Buying beauty presents

I've been asked how to buy beauty presents, usually on a budget because god knows it's not for my makeup techniques . I could write a column about it but honestly, the best advice is from Sali Hughes of The Guardian. Check out the rest of...

Holiday shopping or why lists are great

I’m working on a gift guide for one of my outlets and have already started shopping for my family. Not friends – instead we get together, decorate our various trees and end up appropriately sodden by the end of the night admiring our work.

But gifts – good gifts are difficult to buy. Just yesterday my sister-in-law and I traded some gift suggestions and my mother and I had a call about the exact same topic.

My father? He texted me on the weekend wondering what to get my mother.

That’s why I’m resurrecting this mini-article/tip sheet I wrote when I was at Yahoo. The takeaway? Lists. Lists are good.

Coworking spaces

When I was freelancing full-time I thought about renting a space where I could work without distractions. I have a small office space at home but it took a lot of discipline not to pop in a load of laundry whilst in the middle of an article.

It probably didn’t help that I spent most of my working hours on my couch – yes, working. Laptops are convenient that way.

Shopping in New Orleans

Everyone talks about the food and music scene in New Orleans. Both are true because god knows that Gail and I have been eating our way through the city. In fact, we’re sitting by the pool working, accompanied by margaritas right now.

The shopping is very good here.

New Orleans

Just a picture of where we stayed in the French Quarter. His grandparents bought it and left it...

Heel relief from Damn Heels.

It’s been a while since I updated. I’m sorry about that – I’ve been working on articles for new outlets and pitching like a fiend. (And by fiend I mean freelancer.)

I went to my only show yesterday – Lucian Matis – because his stuff is beautiful and he cuts for a woman with breasts and a bottom.  Also, I’m friends with his PR rep, Gail McInnes. Part of going to the shows is sometimes wearing ridiculous high heels. I say “sometimes” because sometimes I just don’t bother. When I do, I tend to wear my black Manolos. Comfortable enough for heels but tiring after a while.

Here’s where these come in:

Ebates comes to Canada

The Canadian retail space isn’t very competitive. We can’t stack coupons, the sales aren’t as deep as the United States, there isn’t the variety and the only money-back option is to fill out a rebate form, mail it and hope to get a cheque within the next eight weeks, if you’re lucky.

Ebates Canada hopes to change all of that by addressing most, if not, all of these roadblocks to shopping online and adding a few incentives such as coupons and cash back – no rebates.

Kara Ross, Kelly Claman and Customer Service

[caption id="attachment_2132" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Kara Ross jewelry"][/caption] That is a photo of my Kara Ross jewelry. Most of it was bought by me except for a couple pieces that were gifted. Why am I writing about them? Well, I recently bought a few pieces and a...

Cooking… or not

I can cook thanks to my mom and cooking classes in high school. I just don't like cooking at this moment. It's because I work two jobs - my full time one and I try to freelance regularly and I think of that one as...
