The Rewind Button: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

I was too young when the Beatles were around (and all were alive) so to me they exist as a story, just a fairy tale about huge popularity and bringing Brit sound to North America. I was excited to join a group of bloggers ( and was invited by Reb Stevenson) to review the Top 40 albums on Rolling Stone’s list of Top 100 Best Albums. We start off with the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

I listened to Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band as I stared into my cupboard trying to figure out what to cook. I was sick but still I shimmied to the music when it hit me. It was so retro and cheerful! The retro tunes inspired me to make something just as retro – hamburger helper – but with a twist. There was ground beef, of course, but I substituted lentils for half the meat and seasoned it with all-spice, curry powder and chili flakes.

Getting ready to chop the onion

Mmm… comfort food with spice.

While the guys sang about aging, loneliness and hell, death, I seasoned my food, wiped away the tears as I listened to “When I’m 64,” (it was the onions, I swear) and nibbled reflectively on pasta. Here were guys who found worldwide fame and all I could think was, “hey, indian influences in their music. Ground breaking then but kinds meh now.”

You’ll have to forgive me but I grew up in a country where Indian music is common so listening to this album just made me go, “Aw, so cute!”

It still didn’t stop me from humming along to “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and reminding myself that no, the song isn’t about LSD. That didn’t stop me from taking NeoCitran to combat the cold.

NeoCitran. Perfect

All in all, the retro sounds (and retro food) made for a warm, comforting night.

Hamburger Helper. Perfect for sick nights in.

I’m not the only one who listened to the Beatles tonight. Why not read the others who grooves to a little Sgt. Pepper?
