What is Google Glass like?

Yeah, more dork than model but hey.

I really, really like my job. Why? Well, thanks to Nicole Bogart, GlobalNews.ca’s tech reporter, we got a hands-on tutorial about Google Glass. She invited Tom Emrich, one of the few people who owns a pair to demonstrate them to the team.

I’m not going to get into what Google Glass does as you can read all about it here. However, when I tried it, I did like it. Keep in mind that it’s new technology so there is a lot of room for improvement.

I liked the ability to take photos and video. From a work point of view, I can see using it to record as you’re conducting an interview or grabbing photos as you’re out and about. I also liked the ability to promote breaking news and hot headlines in your timeline. Directions were a bit dodgy. Those that tried getting directions didn’t get to were they were going. Google Glass only has 70 apps right now. Body-wise, you have to learn a new set of movements to operate it. You can use voice but right now it doesn’t pick up every voice pitch or accent (as far as we know).

Wearing it does mean focusing on the tiny screen that sits in front your right eye. I found myself focusing entirely on the screen as I looked up directions or took pictures. I can just imagine people using it and walking into other people or driving with it. Emrich did say that the UK has already banned Google Glass while driving.

You will need contacts for them as they do sit snugly over your ears.

And yes, Star Trek comparisons were made.

Let’s not forget the chic unibrow – which is so true:

And finally, everything comes back to Wesley Crusher:
