Paris in Spring: croissants, Montmartre, Oscar Wilde’s grave
When in Paris… you take photos of what you ate and where you went, of course.
I will say this – Paris is spring can be wet. Observe Montmartre in the rain.
The day consisted of sunny periods broken by spring showers. This was one of the more torrential ones, accompanied by wind that turned our umbrellas inside out. Hard to believe just 20 minutes before we were having a drink on a patio.
Although, when you start your day with this, it’s hard to be upset.
We walked quite a few kilometres – nearly 15 – and the day isn’t over yet. That covered Montmartre where we visited La Basilique du Sacre Coeur de Montmartre, the artist community which isn’t so much artistic as just selling quite a bit of tourist tat and Pere Lachaise cemetery, known for the graves of Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison and others.
We also visited the second, older church in Montmartre – Saint-Pierre de Montmartre.
We fortified ourselves with lunch and people watching breaks. Then hit the cemetery to find Oscar Wilde’s monument. I looked at it and thought that if he had seen this (this was a commission from a fan), he would have disapproved. Not quite his taste, I think.
We also saw something we didn’t expect to see.
Tomorrow: Back to freelance!
