How to save more money 2016: Flipp

I’m a huge fan of passive things – income, savings and budgeting. Look, I’m a bit lazy when it comes to these things and I like them to tick over without me having to look at them every single day. This is where the first of three money-saving apps come in.

This is where apps come in. Yes, there are apps for everything but some are better than others – you know it’s true. Who hasn’t downloaded an app – that you’ve paid for – only to find that it doesn’t really do what it promised? And you read the reviews!

Still, like most of us, I’ve got some resolutions for 2016 and they involve saving money, being smarter with it and saving money on groceries without sacrificing my favourite foods. That’s where three of my favourite apps come in.

My new favourite app is Flipp. Once you download it and plug in your postal code (though you can just let your phone’s GPS do the work), it will pull up all the flyers of all the stores in your neighbourhood. You can tailor your shopping list for food, kids’ clothing, furniture, cosmetics or whatever you need. It pulls up discounts and coupons available in your general neighbourhood and on average, you could save up to 30% on your grocery bills.

How much do I love it? I’ve pulled out my phone to show people the app. So far I’ve got four or five people to download it. That’s how much I love it. And it’s certainly saved me a lot of money on meat and fresh fruit both which have skyrocketed in price.

For example, chicken breast (I hate deboning chicken) has gotten ridiculously expensive. I’ve cut back on my meat purchases quite a bit (involuntary vegetarianism the higher the price of meat) but on the occasion that I buy meat, I check the Flipp app. Hey, if I can save almost $3.00 a pound, I’ll consider a trip to NoFrills. It’s a bus ride away.
