Work-related: Entertainment writing

I got the opportunity to do a little entertainment writing earlier this month. Those who know me know that I spent some time covering a maternity leave at Sympatico running their entertainment channel.

It was interesting, the first month I started, Anna Nicole Smith died. The month I finished, Heath Ledger died. In between there were a lot of celebs breaking down, freaking out and not wearing underwear.

Black Swan, True Grit Scores Disqualified from Oscars

Also ineligible are scores from The Kids Are All Right, The Fighter

Black Swan, True Grit, The Kids are All Right and The Fighter are all generating Oscar buzz. But one prize none of them will be winning is that of Best Score.

Variety reports that the scores from all four films have been deemed ineligible for Oscar consideration, as all have violated music-branch rules.

According to sources within the Academy music-branch executive committee, Black Swan and True Grit are ineligible because they were described as ‘scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other pre-existing music.’ In other words, the scores were not original enough.

The score for Black Swan, composed by Clint Mansell, was adapted from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, while True Grit’s score, composed by Carter Burwell, is based on 19th century hymns.

The scores from The Kids are All Right and The Fighter were reportedly ruled ineligible because, though the films have scores, they also feature songs, leaving both original scores diluted.

The score for The Fighter was written by Michael Brook and The Kids are All Right was also written by Carter Burwell.

The score from The King’s Speech is eligible even though it has classical music excerpts.

Oscar nominations will be announced on January 25.
