Don’t need money for a good time

An outdoor concert in Kincardine as part of their Summer Music Festival

Many years ago I was an editor at Toronto.com. It was a listings site where people could list their events for free.

There were some costs associated with some events but a number of those events were free to everyone. I was amazed by how many free or pay-what-you-can events were available if I was just willing to look for them and then go.

When you move to a new neighbourhood, you might feel that you can’t afford to go out. After all, you just bought a new home or may have done some renovations. You can still have a great social life and discover someone or something new by just doing a little digging.

Why neighbourhoods need open space

I do bootcamp and every summer I sweat out some squats in a local park. When I walk home after class, I pass two retired men who are just chilling on a bench, people-watching. They’re there every night, sitting on that bench, usually drinking Tim Hortons or David’s Tea and talking. If it’s warm enough in winter, they’re back on that bench.

How much money? Ouch!

Tomorrow, four times the usual payment is coming out of my account and going on my mortgage. I try to save up so I can do lump sums as well as pay a little extra every fortnight. The thing is, after I called my bank and asked them to take out that money, I hung up and felt a little sick. That’s a lot of money.

Saving Money #2: Make Do and Mend

Holey sweater

A little austerity chic is happening in my wardrobe right now. I have a weakness for dresses and did buy quite a few last year (didn’t blow my budget and paid cash, fyi) but this year I decided to cut back on my clothing budget and wear what I have in my closet. That includes remixing outfits and repairing anything damaged.

I am drawing the line at drawing on stockings though.

Cupcake Maker

This was part of the President's Choice Holiday media preview. I used this in a gift guide this year and it's been lingering in my mind. Mini cupcakes are fine but what else would you make? Quiche, muffins, bread rolls and what else?...
